The House
Built in 1880, this Italianate Victorian house is a jewel on the village green in Middletown Springs, Vermont.
Located in the center of Middletown Springs, population 792, the house shares the green with a classic New England Community Church, the Historical Society, the General Store, and the Town Hall.
The house boasts eight bedrooms, nine bathrooms, a dining room, sitting room, music room, library, and a widow’s walk that gives a view of the surrounding town.
Madeleine (your host) lives in the Carriage House with her partner and her dog, Fenrir. Her father Andrew lives in the innkeeper’s suite behind the kitchen and her cat Kitkat rules the house.
What Guests Have Said:
Your host:
Hi! I’m Madeleine! I designed this retreat to be the retreat I wanted to attend; I wanted something with structure that still allowed me to spend my time however I wanted, I wanted something that felt small without being isolated, and I wanted the whole week to feel beautiful and relaxing.
I bought my house in 2021 and, since then, I have been painstakingly renovating it into a bed-and-breakfast. I’ve run three of my rooms on Airbnb for almost four years, and I’ve learned a lot about hosting, community, and creating meaningful experiences for my guests.
Because this retreat isn’t about me, it’s about you. It’s about the book you’ve been dying to write, or the time you need but can’t get at home, or the perfect 18th-century cemetery across the street to inspire your gothic fantasy novel.
I want you to experience the magic of Middletown Springs. Come write with me.

The Grounds
Situated on nearly three acres, the property has a small vegetable garden, multiple perennial beds, and a meadow surrounded by oaks and maples. The far end of the property is bordered by a brook that feeds into the Poultney River. Although the house is in the center of town, the property provides a safe haven for creativity with plenty of quiet space to sit at the garden table, spread out a blanket in the meadow, or relax below the oak tree. If gardening, swimming, or walking are among your preferred recreational activities, all are possible on or around the property.
In early June, the weather is likely to still be quite temperate, with low humidity and temperatures in the 70’s and 80’s, although as low as the 60’s at night. The trees, shrubs, and flowers will be in full bloom by June, and the vegetable gardens will be planted. The herb bed may even be producing!
Deer, barn cats, raccoons, and even a family of foxes have all been spotted on the property. It truly feels like an oasis of nature in the middle of a quaint, New England village.
