Additional information

  • Not necessarily, but most attendees will be working on long-form fiction. You’ll need a writing sample for the application, and our evening sessions are built around sharing and growing together.

  • Everyone is paying the same price for food and workshops. Price variation comes from room size, bed size, and access to private space.

Day Passes are available and only cover the writing blocks, the workshops, and one meal.

  • We believe there is something sacred about community spaces designed for women, and that there are not enough of them. For now, our retreats are only available to women.

Note: here, women includes all femmes, non-binary people, and anyone who feels safest and most at home in a group of women. You are welcome here.

  • When I say rural Vermont, I mean rural. The closest grocery store is 15 minutes away, there are no restaurants in town, and there’s nowhere to shop. What we do have is a locally owned General Store with a deli and daily brewed coffee. We have two cemeteries, one old and one “new” (some graves date to the 1800’s). We have miles of beautiful walking routes on back roads that give you views of the surrounding mountains. We have a river that boasts multiple swimming holes and some of the coldest but most magical spots you’ll find in nature. If you’re looking for a beautiful house in an isolated area with nothing to do but take walks, wade in rivers, and write, then Middletown Springs is right for you.

  • In order to maximize the benefits of our three feedback sessions, we feel it’s important to set and agree to ground rules about how and when we critique each other’s work. The first night will serve to get everyone on the same page so that we don’t have inequalities in feedback time.

  • My cat Kitkat has access to shared spaces, but is generally kept out of bedrooms to prevent allergens. She is extremely friendly and will happily sit in your lap for hours while you write. My dog Fenrir may visit the main house during the evening or to join walks, but will be living primarily in the carriage house to avoid noise distractions during writing blocks.

Because of the animals who already live here, we cannot accommodate pets or ESA’s. If you have a service animal, please let us know so we can make arrangements.

  • Some table wine may be provided for the welcome dinner and farewell dinner, but otherwise alcohol will not be supplied. The General Store carries a selection of beer, canned cocktails, and wine. Please remember our community purpose is to write, and we cannot provide or receive helpful feedback if we are drunk after dinner. Drink responsibly.

How to Get Here:

The closest airports are Albany (95 minutes) and Burlington (110 minutes) and a rental car is encouraged. There is an Amtrak station in Rutland (25 minutes) from which pick ups can be arranged. Writers will have the opportunity to connect with each other before the retreat and may arrange carpooling or share rental car costs.

*Travel is not included in our listed price

What to Pack:

Writers are encouraged to pack comfortable clothing for yoga, writing, and time spent outside. If you’d like to walk in town, comfortable sneakers are encouraged. Layers for hot weather, rainy days, and chilly nights are encouraged. There are three watering holes within 10 minutes, if you’d like to bring a swimsuit. Feel free to bring books, notebooks, and all the cozy items you would like.

Food:

Breakfast will be continental style, with fresh fruit, yogurt, oatmeal, toast, and bagels. Lunch will be a combination of soups, salads, and sandwiches. Dinner will be large batch meals prepared daily. Vegetarian and vegan options will be available if required. Some snacks will be available and a small general store with a deli is across the street.
